Omelet is a London-based producer and rapper, recognisable for his distinct and off-kilter sound. Having previously released both beat tapes and rap EPs, Omelet has steadily descended deeper into the world of production.

An avid collector of vinyl, he draws inspiration out of everything from 1970s funk to early 00s R&B. His latest project, Yokey Boy Presents: Volume 1, is just the first in a series of releases, characterised by his new-found love of sampling. DIGGR: What were your earliest music influences?

OMELET: “As a kid my parents used to play a lot of Soukous/Congolese rumba music like Awilo Longomba, Kofi Olomide when they would have parties with their friends especially my God parents, my dad used to play Craig David, Coldplay, Tupac, Biggie Smalls & Snoop Dogg (Rhythm & Gangsta album) in the car.

Mum was big on Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Brandy that kind of ilk & my cousin, she used to have a load of Destiny’s Child on tape/CD that she would play all day.”

D: Who are your biggest musical influences?

O: “Man that’s a long list but from the top of my head in no particular order I would say, The Neptunes/Pharrell, Madlib, Terrace Martin, Timbaland, J-Dilla, Tall Black Guy, Grant Green, Erykah Badu, Pino Palladino”

D: What is one of your favourite pieces of sleeve art and why?

O: “Stevie Wonder – Innervisions I just like the warm colours and the abstract nature Efram Wolff chose for the cover and the inside of the record, the fact its called innervisions as well its just a great marriage of trippy visuals and for that time forward thinking music.”
