RPM: Admin

Admin has been consciously collecting and spreading musical grooves in Bristol for around a decade. Founder of the fabled clubnight, Slix Disco, and edits label and party series ‘Community Disc-O’s’, the consistency and quality of his musical projects stand out amid a vibrant local scene whilst attracting attention from peers and fans alike from around the globe.

A studious beatsmith and producer, Admin draws influence from his record collection. Disco, Jazz, House and Hip Hop guide his own productions into different soulful and eclectic directions. Whether DJing percussive-heavy disco, producing jazz-tinged house, jamming with samplers and keyboards for beat tapes, scouring for new edits to release or soothing listeners over the radio waves, Admin executes everything with detail and affection. It’s these attributes that make him an exciting talent and one to cast a forensic eye on.

Each week we will be taking a dip into the crates and minds of some of the digging scenes most prolific collectors.

DIGGR: Motivated Mondays – what tune gets your engine going?

ADMIN: “JC Davis – A New Day (is Here at Last)”

D: One record that sums up your happiest memories and where does it take you?

A: Mystic Merlin – Just Can’t Give You Up.

Just so many good times with this one…. big spin at my first residency in Bristol. I used to run a night called Slix Disco at Stoke’s Croft venue The Love Inn alongside my good friend Harri Pepper.

What started out as a Thursday night student event, steadily grew over the years, and as we gained experience, the parties morphed into serious weekend disco beatdowns with some of the world’s finest disco collectors rolling through to play (Mark Grusane, Darryn Jones & Tone B Nimble being a few that rolled in from Chicago..!). This track was, and still is, in the bag with me on the music journey.”

D: What is one of your favourite pieces of sleeve art and why?

A: Art Webb – Mr. Flute.

I mean come on, just check out that goat man… amazing. Some incredible funky music on this record and some big names in the credits too, including Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess, Sylvia Striplin and Venus Dodson.”

D: Name one friend who is the ultimate fiend for the wax

A: “Mike is a great friend and an amazing DJ that I have a lot of respect for. I used to try and find record to surprise him when playing together, but then most often he would pull it out of his bag and show me he already has it haha.”

D: It’s a Slothy Sunday – what tune are you hanging out to?

A: Laraaji – Being Here”
