RPM: N.E. Girl

Esther aka N.E. Girl is Copenhagen based DJ, collector, club promoter and multimedia designer originally from South London.

“Collecting and sharing music has been a passion of mine since I was very young. Having taken up DJing at 15, the motivation to dig grew along with my interest to DJ professionally. After a few years of organising nights in London, then relocating to Copenhagen, I continued to pursue DJ professionally – collaborating with different venues and promoters to create a space for underground and underrepresented genres. Currently, I’m a part of the @another.name.cph agency roster; @co.select, a london based collective advocating for balance in DJ culture; and promoter of Afro-Swing and Jasho Club.”

Who is your biggest musical influence?

“One of many is Bristol-based producer, DJ
and label head Pinch. I admire his minimal
and dub-influenced production style.”

What is one of your favorite pieces of sleeve art and why?

“Massive Attack v. Mad Professor – No Protection. It’s a really vibrant album cover. I like the illustrations and small details and ironically, the music doesn’t sound as aggressive or violent as the cover.”

Name one friend who is a fiend for the wax?

“My friend Rafal aka RMZ. He’s a junglist, producer and DJ, who owns (or is awaiting delivery for) many records.”

You’ve just been dumped… What’s on the turntable?

“Lady blackbird – Black Acid Soul.”

When digging, what draws you to a record?

“I’m always drawn to the artwork first. There are a few labels that have a signature style, such as AKO beatz, Sector 7, or even Deep Medi. Then, I’m interested in the features and any interesting or unexpected collaborations. Ultimately, as I’m very new to digging and rarely play records, the price is often the deciding factor!”
