RPM: Jenny Jen

Born in Bangkok to Thai-Anglo parents, currently lives in Bristol via Kent, Nottingham and London and imminently moving to East Sussex.

Jenny Jen is someone that has been deeply passionate about music from a young age thanks to her very musical parents and nurtured to the day by her wonderful international disco family. As a DJ, Jen’s sets a blend of Soul, Disco, Afrobeat & House.

“I used to promote nights when I first moved to London in my 20’s which led to DJing and I love spinning at any opportunity when I get the chance. Since being in Bristol I work a day or two a week for a company called Team Love who put on amazing festivals such as @lovesavesthedayfestival@loveintfestival and @waterworksldn to name a few and the rest of the time I’m busy raising my two gorgeous boys, and now also preparing for a big move to the South coast.”

Fresh back from sun soaked Croatian festival Love International, playing with her partner in crime of over 15 years Nadia (nadia_simone_) Now with her sights set firmly on another back to back set at Houghton 2022 with former RPM feature-ess @renatamaris. This is not to be missed if you find yourself at the festival, get yourself to this!

Away from the festival fields, you can catch Jenny Jen taking her records for a monthly spin on the airwaves on Bristol based @noodsradio , exploring the more eclectic side of her musical range.

What were your earliest musical influences?

“My Dad was a big cheese in the Thai funk/rock scene in the 70s and 80s and was in various bands so grew up listening to some great music and meeting some pretty interesting people. My mum was a dancer and used to DJ too back in the day and loves her disco. I was brought up on Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, George Benson, Randy Crawford to name a few. My folks took me to my first concert which was Earth Wind and Fire at the Royal Albert Hall when I was about 13. It’s clearly where my love of all things Disco, funk and soul come from.”

Name a record to soundtrack the sunshine…

“Sylvester – Good Feeling
Can. never. get. enough. of. this. record.”

Where is your digging Mecca?

“I had a really great trip to NYC recently with my other half and we had a great time scouring the record shops in Brooklyn especially. Spent hours in Elevator Sounds and love all the other random shops with amazing dollar bins.”

It’s a Slothy Sunday, what tune are you hanging out to?

“Sugar Minott – Wicked Ah Go Feel It”

Name one record that sums up your happiest memories and where does it take you back to?

“There are so many but ‘DOC SEVERINSEN – I WANNA BE WITH YOU’ is up there, I walked back down the aisle with my husband as man and wife at our wedding to that song and it will forever give me goosebumps everytime I hear it and reminds of very special times with very special people.”
