Echo Juliet is the alias of Emily Jones: a producer, DJ and classically-trained percussionist who has also spent over ten years curating live music, including one of the UK’s biggest jazz festivals. Her music blends hypnotic percussion loops and organic sounds with contemporary beats, creating a melodic feel nestled somewhere between electronic, jazz, soul and classical; think Four Tet and Floating Points. DJ sets spanning jazz, funk, disco and broken beat have led to credits including @sxsw, @greenmanfest, @lovesupremefest and @spiritland, as well as residencies for @cafeartum, @soundcrashmusic and guest hosting on @worldwide.fm.

Emily also helps run female and non-binary DJ community @selextorhood, and her work on gender balance in the music industry has been featured on Woman’s Hour on @bbcradio4, @jazzfmuk and in the @guardian.

DIGGR: Favourite record labels of all time?

EMILY: “Blue Note, Brownswood, Ninja Tune, Tru Thoughts and Rhythm Section.”

D: Who are your biggest musical influences?

E: “As a producer there are tons but Four Tet, Floating Points, Emma-Jean Thackray, Dani Siciliano and Matthew Herbert are big ones.

As a DJ it is 100% Gilles Peterson. The way he moves between genres has been inspiring people for decades.”

D: Strangest place you’ve ever found a record?

E: “I found a great Ghanaian highlife record in a dusty antique shop in rural Suffolk. I told the full story about this on Worldwide FM’s record store day special back in June!”

D: Name a song to soundtrack the sunshine…

D: Where is your digging Mecca (city / country) and why?

E: “I used to travel a lot around Europe for work and made a point to buy one record in every city, my favourite shop was Music Mania in Ghent (Belgium), I spent literally hours in there.

But I’ve heard good things about what Barcelona has to offer so I’ve always wanted to go digging there.”
