Revelations Per Minute - 60 Seconds with NikNak

Now based in Leeds, Nicole Raymond aka Niknak is not one to sit on her hands and has been earnestly mastering her craft in many facets. Without further ado, we thought best to let NikNak introduce herself in her own words:

"A pint-sized ninja who’s from London originally, and also likes to collect comic books.

Hey! My name is NikNak, I have a lifelong connection to music that has seeped into many areas of my life while continuing to surprise me too. I’m a DJ, award-winning turntablist, producer and radio presenter (among other things), and I’m also part of a band called @tcandthegroovefamily.

I’ve supported people like @mrs_cruff, @akalamusic, @princessnokia,@madlib and Grandmaster Flash (@djflash4eva)...to name a few. I’ve also done surround sound performances - more of these to come!

My second album is out now called Bashi X2 and that’s available on vinyl as well as digital via @kynantrecords :)

Keep an eye out for more music, live performances and DJ sets from me as well, i've got loads to come!! "

DIGGR: One record that sums up your happy memories and where does it take you back?

NIKNAK: "Dennis Brown - Get to Love in Time. I strongly remember the first time I heard it when I was growing up. I think I was around 7 or 8 years old and my mum was playing it loudly on a Sunday afternoon… and I remember feeling warm and smiling a lot while it played. I know that song off by heart and can play it a little bit on bass…very little."

D: What is it about vinyl that makes you dig it?

N: "The fact that you can touch music. Everything is rather disposable and vying for your immediate attention all the time, whether that's getting plays on Spotify etc.

There’s like a lost performance and sacredness to the act of putting on a vinyl… or digging to find something you’ve never heard before. That buzz will never go away."

D: You’ve just been dumped… What’s on the turntable?

N: "Jordan Rakei - Eye to Eye, off his second album Wallflower."

D: When digging, what are 2 of the things that draw you to a record?

N: "Artwork and track names."

D: First record purchase and where you bought it

N: "Burial - Untrue, HMV I think…"

Thanks NikNak for sharing your digs with us!
