Counter Culture 009: Wax and Beans

“Wax and Beans is Bury’s only independent record store, situated in a stunning Grade II listed building. Alongside our stock of new and used vinyl, we have seating over two floors, and serve hot and cold beverages, and selection of food, snacks and fresh cakes.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the space that we have created, whether it be digging for vinyl records, enjoying a coffee, meeting with friends, finishing of your schoolwork or just enjoying the music and atmosphere.”

🤔 Who should be on the next CC feature?

How has the resurgence of vinyl affected your business?

“We continue to see an increase in record sales and that’s borne out of an even younger demographic constantly discovering the media, alongside long-time collector’s continuing their passion, and some fabulous Anniversary reissues being released.”

Have you ever discovered any hidden messages or Easter eggs within album artwork or liner notes?

“We bought a second hand collection recently and there was the debut LP by The Rhythmaires. Stuart, the lead singer is a regular in the shop, and he was delighted when we showed him the press release that was typed out on A4 paper, and a poster included. Neither of which he had ever seen!”

How do you curate your inventory? What factors do you consider when selecting new records to stock?

“Since opening 4 years ago, when Ben first curated our stock, we’ve drawn influences from our customers and friends of the shop. It’s evolved into an ever-changing blend of Jazz to psych to pop to indie to jungle!”

How do you stay connected with the local music community and support emerging artists?

“As a chart registered store we get offered lots of bands, who subsequently play in store to promote their music. It’s fabulous to be able to host such esteemed bands in Bury.”

Are there any notable trends or shifts in music taste among your customers that you’ve observed over the years?

“With customers becoming younger, we’ve found that younger artists like Sam Fender, Gerry Cinnamon, Florence + The Machine continue to grow in popularity. Older folk like ourselves appreciate the energy and party that they bring to the music too! Keeps us young!”
